Aquatic society on course, but taking it slow

With a new executive in place and between 600 and 700 members, the South Cariboo Aquatic Society (SCAS) has an ever-strengthening foothold on the community, but this year, chooses to just tread water.

The society was officially registered in 2008, and since then, members have focused their efforts on raising awareness about the need for an aquatic centre in the South Cariboo.

Lori Fry, one of two SCAS vice presidents, says this year will bring much of the same, with no major plans of any other nature in the forecast.

"We have politicians trying to work with the society to get a pool, but they are working with several other recreational organizations as well.

“We don't want to go to referendum until we have educated the community. When we feel that we have the support, we will take it to the next step of referendum."

The society held its annual general meeting on May 3 in the office of Montane Forest Consultants.

It drew between 25 and 30 people, including board and society members at large.

New to the president's seat is Kathy Reid, who was a former vice-president. Along with Fry, Brenda Lund holds a position of vice-president and Amanda Bird is secretary.

The treasurer position is filled by Susan Code, and John Code is the government liaison. Gordon Hutchinson will serve at alternate director of government liaison.

Directors are Leon Chretien, Cynthia Keri, Marilyn Vinson, Margot Harris, Gina Gigliotti and Candace Copley.
