100 Mile hockey team fights at provincials

The 100 Mile Milers Peewee Rep team, sponsored by Jayco Plumbing and Heating, was down in the Kootnays for the tier four provincials.

The 100 Mile Milers Peewee Rep team was down in the Kootnays for the tier four provincials March 18-23. The team took home one victory and placed sixth out of seven teams.

The 100 Mile Milers Peewee Rep team, sponsored by Jayco Plumbing and Heating, was down in the Kootnays for the tier four provincials March 18-23. The host city of Fernie treated the hockey players, coaches, and volunteers to a banquet. The teams were entertained by First Nation dancers, a slide show and a mock interview with the host team Fernie junior Ghostriders.

 

Game 1

100 Mile House played the Kimberley Dynamiters to start off the tournament. The 100 Mile Squad battled nerves at the start and couldn't recover and ended up losing 14-3. Two of the goals were scored by Kyson Hopson with assists from Corey Harding and Carson Huryn. Jackson Hooper got the last goal for the Milers with an assist from Martin Stillas. Both goalies Joey Isaac and Kyle Harding shared the goal tending duties, facing 73 shots combined.

 

Game 2

Monday, March 20, had the team playing the Langley Eagles. The team knew going into this game that this coast team was going to be tough competion. The first period saw the Milers trailing only by one. The team was working hard to hold off the Eagles. Then penalties led to the team's demise in the second and by then the team couldn't catch up. The Milers lost 10-3 with a hat trick scored by Hopson. Assists went to Alex Kuyek and Aidan Moore.

 

Game 3

The 100 Mile Milers knew the third game, against North Okanagan Knights, was going to be the toughest game of the provincials. It was a very physical game with many penalties on both sides, goalie Isaac took over 85 shots, and the Milers lost players to injuries and penalties. The final score was 17-2 for the Knights. Goals were scored by Hopson with an assist from Vanessa Betschart.

 

Game 4

Then the Milers pulled off a win over the Chetwynd Lonestar Giants. The team was amazing, pulling together after losing three players. Goalie Isaac was on fire. Captain Kyson Hopson scored six seconds into the game and had a hat trick by the end of the first. Assistant captain Shayne Sutton had an assist. The second period saw C. Huryn score with an assist from Hopson. Then Trey Pacheco found the back of the net.

The Milers were on a roll and Stillas snuck one past the goalie with a pass from Assistant Captain Jadyn Monical. Hopson let a killer slap shot go and scored one more. To end the second, C. Harding poked one by the goalie with an assist from Monical and Hopson. To start the third period Hopson scored with 10 seconds gone on the clock with a heads up pass from Monical. Then with amazing passing from Nolan Duff to Hopson to Monical. She added another for the 100 Mile team.

Hopson shot one with a assist from Kuyek. Then Hopson won the face off and passed it back to defensemen Monical who netted another one. To end the period Hopson used his speed and decked the goalie on a break away. The Milers take this one 13-5.

 

Game 5

Game 5 had the Milers playing the Prince Rupert Seawolves. The Seawolves had speed on their side and awesome defence. The Milers had a hard time getting out of their own end as Isaac faced 75 shots. The Milers could hardly get any shots off until the third period when Stillas shot one over the goalie with an assist from Duff and Hopson. Hopson then got on the board with a wicked pass from E.Moore. The final was 9-2 for Prince Rupert.

 

Game 6

Last game of the provincials was against home town Fernie. Hopson found the back of the net with a great pass from Monical.

Then Hopson got two more. Betschart then was digging hard after the puck and stole it away from Fernie's defence men and lifted the puck blocker side to add the final goal for the Milers. The team played hard to the bitter end but fell short 6-4 for Fernie.

Overall, the 100 Mile team placed sixth out of the seven teams at the provincials.
