Strong second period tips the balance for 100 Mile House

The 100 Mile House Wranglers survived a late blast from the Golden Rockets to win its inaugural Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season opener 5-4 on Sept. 13.

It was the second period when the Wranglers asserted themselves, scoring four goals – two on the power play – and taking a 4-2 lead into the third frame at the Golden Arena.

Connor Sloan scored first for 100 Mile House, followed Tyson Levesque and Luke Santerno, who added two. Assists in the second period went to Sloan, William Orrey and Jaiden Ward.

The third period saw the Wranglers score first as Lane van de Wetering found the back of the net for the game winner with assists going to Ward and W. Orrey.

Golden scored twice more – with 11:21 and 7:56 remaining – and outshot 100 Mile House 13-6 in the final period for a 41-27 game total.

Kristian Stead was in net for 100 Mile House. Following an impressive pre-season, Stead made 37 saves on 41 shots in the opener.

Sloan led the Wranglers with four points, while W. Orrey tallied three, Santerno (2), Ward (2), Van De Wetering (1) and Levesque (1).

The game was a first of four on the road.

The 100 Mile House club has its home opener at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre on Sept. 21.
