Severe thunderstorms possible

100 Mile House could get gusty winds, hail, heavy rain and lightning

Severe thunderstorm watches for the North Thompson, Cariboo, and 100 Mile House regions were issued around 11:30 a.m. today (Aug. 21)

A cold front passing through these areas in afternoon could serve as a trigger for some potentially severe weather – most likely between 3 and 8 p.m.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

The main risk for today is large hail, upwards of 15-20 millimetres in size, which can damage property and cause injury.

Strong wind gusts are possible and gust could reach 70-90 kilometre per hour.

Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops.

Heavy downpours are likely and could get up to 15-20 mm per hour, which could cause flash flooding and water pooling on roads.

It's anticipated the thunderstorms could continue overnight, but would likely not be as severe.
