Cadet David Beck of 100 Mile House rose to the top of his platoon during the six-week Drill and Ceremonial Instructor (Army) Course at Vernon Cadet Training Centre (VCTC) last month.

For his excellent performance on course, he has been awarded with Top Cadet in 3 Platoon.

Beck is a member of 2887 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (Rocky Mountain Rangers [South Cariboo]) located in 100 Mile House.

The corps parades on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Horse Lake Training Centre, located at 5830 Horse Lake Rd.

Cadet Beck was selected as top of his platoon and was amongst 85 cadets who completed the Drill and Ceremonial Instructor (Army) Course this summer. The cadets on the course not only perfected their individual drill, they also learned to teach younger cadets at their home corps.

During the summer, they formed quarter guards to welcome dignitaries to Vernon Cadet Training Centre, and provided flag parties for parades. They also formed the guard and flag party for the Okanagan Military Tattoo.

For the final parade and sunset ceremony, the cadets on the Drill and Ceremonial Course formed the Guard and fired the Feu de Joie, a rapid sequence of blank rounds.

During the summer, more than 1,770 sea, army, and air cadets from Western Canada will have spent up to six weeks in the Okanagan Valley training centre, expanding the training they receive at their home corps, developing new skills and forming friendships.

The Cadet Program is a national program for young Canadians aged 12 to 18 who are interested in participating in a variety of fun, challenging and rewarding activities while learning about the sea, army and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Cadets make valuable contributions to Canadian society on a daily basis in terms of environmental, citizenship and community activities. Cadets also learn valuable life and work skills, such as teamwork, leadership and citizenship.
