Cultural centre breaks ground
An official ground-breaking took place last month on a long-awaited Indigenous Cultural Centre in 108 Mile Ranch.
The move came a year after the Northern Secwepemc Cultural Society (NSCS) received a $4 million federal grant last year for the project, which will share and celebrate the rich and vibrant history of the Northern Secwepemc people.
The cultural centre will be located on a two-acre parcel near the 108 Mile Ranch Heritage Site.
New pizzeria at the Wheelroom
The owners of the Farrier/Eatery have signed the lease for the restaurant at the 108 Mile Wheelroom, with plans to open a pizzeria on Aug. 1. Work has already started to replace the roof and gut/renovate the kitchen and interior, according to 108 Golf Resort manager Lee Hansen. The Wheelhouse is located next to the South Cariboo Regional Airport, beside the postal kiosk.
Fly In
About 40 small planes, from as far away as Nelson, Vernon and Qualicum Beach, descended on the South Cariboo Regional Airport last Sunday, June 4, for a Fly In – the first event at the airport in at least three years. Airport manager Ross Donahue said the good weather drew a good crowd to the event, which featured some home-built aircraft.
“It’s kind of an excuse for pilots to get together and look at each other’s planes,” he said. “People just come in and visit and show off their stuff.” Hot dogs and hamburgers were provided by the 108 Mile Lions Club.
Getting hitched in the 108
The chapel at 108 Mile Heritage Site hosted its first wedding of the season on Saturday when Adriana and Steve Nasby tied the knot. Another wedding is scheduled for June 10 at the chapel, along with a big one at the 108 Golf Resort.
Golf tournaments
It’s that time of year for hitting balls. Mr T. Contracting will hold a golf tournament this weekend at the 108 Golf Resort to raise money for the Cancer Society. About 80 people will compete in the tournament.
The 108 Seniors’ Golf Club will hold its Cariboo Dice Texas Scramble on Thursday, June 22.
108 Beach
The Main Beach at the 108 Mile Ranch now has new picnic tables!
The site, with its popular fishing dock, has been hopping these days as visitors take advantage of the amenities to stay cool in the heat.
Meanwhile, the 108 Mile Ranch Community Association board is pursuing a strategic planning process – SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) for the community.
Chair Michele Spence said they had some good conversations with the community during the RCA’s 108 Fair last weekend.
