Last week, I broke the screen on my phone. It’s still somewhat usable, but it’s not great. My phone is quite an important tool, having to use it regularly for work, whether it’s recording interviews, phone calls or as a backup camera for my DSLR when it runs out of battery or when I’ve forgotten to bring an SD card.

Getting a new phone is something many of us have had to deal with and perhaps one of the most menacing tasks I deal with every so many years. Little did I know, this would be the most challenging year yet.

I had not long ago gotten a call from my provider offering me a deal on upgrading. I’d said I wasn’t interested at the time because while the battery life on my phone was decreasing a little, overall it was fine. However, now that I’d broken the screen, obviously the situation had changed.

First, I went to a local authorized dealer on three separate occasions, but unfortunately, on all three occasions, their internet was down. I had to go to Williams Lake for a doctors appointment and went to the authorized dealer there (I was hoping to get it resolved quickly).

I was there for a little bit and after talking to the store rep and a representative on the phone I left without a resolution. What I was being offered was about twice as expensive as my current plan meaning that from my perspective I was better off buying a phone outright and sticking with what I had.

Next, I called the phone company twice. Eventually settling on a plan and phone that were acceptable.

However, it also became clear they still had the wrong address. I gave them the correct address and had them read it back to me so I was sure it would be going to the correct address.

A day later, they called me twice. Once to make sure the new address was correct and once to offer me an upgrade. Next, I got an email saying that the phone was shipped but to the wrong address. I called their phone line around 9 p.m.

After an hour on hold, I was told the people who could deal with this problem weren’t in.

During the next two days, I used their live chat twice… I still don’t know if I’ll ever get a phone at the correct address. There’s something ironic about having to communicate that much with a communications company.
