The joys of spring

My wife really wanted to see the Black Panther movie. So on Sunday, we went to Williams Lake while my mom babysat. The road between 150 Mile House and Williams Lake was like something from a video game or movie. The road there must be exceptionally hungry after a winter of hibernation as the holes look like they’re just about ready to swallow vehicles whole.

I was dodging left to right with sweat on my brow (I really didn’t need to be wearing a thick winter coat) only to be nearly launched into the air at about 30 km/h by pieces of asphalt sticking up.

Driving into work hasn’t been much different. The driveway has turned into a muddy and slushy river of rocks, mud, unthawing feces, chunks of ice probably capable of taking down the Titanic (or apparently at least the EV-canister on my car) and whatever is left from the satanic rituals the coyotes have undoubtedly performed throughout the winter.

To top it all off, as a nice omen this week, there was an owl sitting on the side of the road. Thinking it was quite odd for a fully grown owl to be sitting by the side of the road in brought daylight, my wife and I figured it might be injured. We pulled a U-turn and we grabbed a piece of clothing to wrap it in should it indeed be injured. When I say we, I mean I sent my wife out of the car to check on it. I’m not sure entirely what our plan was, although it probably involved calling a Conservation Officer. However, once within about two to three feet, it flew off, indicating it must have been at least somewhat okay.

Travelling back up the driveway into what would be akin to traversing the river from Heart of Darkness if not for the bright blue skies, we got home. Coming home has been less fun lately as well. I used to come home to a super excited baby boy. Now when we get home he wants nothing to do with me, as mom walks into the door at the same time bringing forth the horrible realization she wasn’t there all day. Although I guess my wife can have that in exchange for waking up several times a night.
