Still time for Mrs.Barnett to change

To the editor:

I am responding to reports in the Free Press about Donna Barnett stating she would cross the floor and sit as an Independent if the referendum showed the people wanted the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) scrapped and the government didn’t repeal the act.

I find her statement troubling when she says “the people.”

Does she mean the people of British Columbia and the referendum as it is legislated?

Does she mean the people of B.C. and a changed legislation to reflect 50 per cent plus one of the population as her leader had promised?

Or does she mean 50 per cent plus one of the Cariboo-Chilcotin constituency?

If its the first scenario, that is unacceptable because another has been promised and her government needs to change the legislation to reflect that.

If it’s the second, that, too, is unacceptable because she speaks (hopefully) for the people of Cariboo-Chilcotin.

And if she means she will abide by the wishes of her constituents at 50 per cent plus one, she has already refused to do that. She followed the party line and not the “wishes of her constituents” as she had said during the campaign.

The people are not going to support her unless she does a complete turnabout immediately on this matter. Unless she wants to be possibly the first MLA in history to actually be fired by the voters, I suggest that she act swiftly in the next two weeks.
