Local gas prices lead to out-of-town shopping

Inflated gas prices drive shoppers out of 100 Mile House

To the editor:

I have lived in this community since 1966, and in all that time I have met wonderful people and supported the business community while raising my family.

I am fed up with the gas prices in 100 Mile House. I can go to Kamloops for an appointment and save $0.30 per litre. Last week in Kamloops, gas was at $0.98 per litre.

Why we are being held captive by the gas stations in 100 Mile? It is having an effect on all of us.

People are asking why the government wants us to believe they have our best interests in mind. When is it going to listen to the common people?

Never before have I seen so much gouging of the general public. People are fed up with the unfair gas prices and can't wait for an opportunity to shop outside of 100 Mile.

I believe the only thing keeping the business community alive today is the underground economy.

The drug trade is the biggest industry; probably bigger than all other industries combined. Marijuana should be made legal and taxed accordingly. This would ease the tax burden and at least the drug industry would be contributing to our infrastructure.

While I was in Kamloops, I shopped and filled my vehicle including gas cans. I did this so I would have enough gas to get through until the next time I could get to Kamloops.

I believe I am stating how the general public feels about the way we have been treated by the gas stations. What have they done to deserve our patronage?

If they can sell gas in Kamloops at $0.98 a litre, people will take advantage of shopping elsewhere.

Unfortunately, the good merchants are paying the price.
