Happy New Year everyone!
What a gorgeous December we had, not too cold or snowy at all, in fact, we had a green Christmas up here in these hills! That did not last long as it started snowing on Christmas evening right through Boxing Day. It seems like each day we get a skiff or even a bit more.
Good news for the ski hills though, Mt Timothy was able to open on the forecasted date of Dec. 20 and the tube park is now also open. Sounds like fun for all the folks that love to play in the snow! A little something to remember though, watch out for the traffic coming out between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., it can be quite congested.
The Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena is keeping busy with many activities right now, one of the busiest places in town. Attendance at the Co-ed Hockey on Friday nights has really picked up as has the public skating on Sundays. Skating with Santa on Dec. 22 had a record attendance of 96 people with 59 skaters on the ice.
Everyone enjoyed seeing Santa and grabbing a photo with him. The concession was busy as it was also a free hot dog and hot chocolate day. There is a potential for more weekend rentals in the future and there is an open call out for Zamboni drivers. If anyone is interested in learning how to run the Zamboni, please contact Russ Neher at 604-561-8971. The Community Club is grateful for all the donations we have been receiving – Lakeshore Mechanical for the wire shelving for the organization of the skates, Mr. T Contracting and Timber Mart for their donations of metal roofing and most recently Excel Restorations for the purchase of hockey nets from 100 Mile Minor Hockey.
Our little community is amazing with all the donations and generosity towards the folks in need. This is a record year for the LLH Volunteer Fire Department's Christmas Hamper Campaign – a total of 29 hampers were prepared and delivered. Thumbs up everyone for a super excellent job done!
The Community Hall had a full house of vendors at the Dec. 8 flea market. There were tons of items to choose from and of course lots of Christmas baking. Santa was a big hit again this year with the children – there was a little gift for each one of them. The next Flea Market will be on Sunday, Jan. 26 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mark the date on your calendar so that you can stop by and check out all the treasures that I am sure you will find there!
If you love playing cards plan to stop by the Pioneer Centre on Jan. 25. There is a crib tournament happening as well as a spaghetti luncheon. Come on out and meet up with the folks at this popular event.
Looking ahead at the weather we are on a bit of a warming trend again so if you go out on the lake (which I hear has frozen over) please take extra care. Someone has made an outdoor skating rink and has sent invitations out to play fun hockey games but with the caution of playing at your own risk!
