January was a beautiful month, weather-wise, with days with incredible sunsets and sunrises and then, of course, the brilliant blue skies. There were some snowy days that created a bit of havoc but not too many. The folks that love winter had a blast, playing hockey on the lake, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and skiing. Unfortunately, I am the one who would rather stay indoors and stay warm, fall is my favourite season.
Has anyone made plans for Family Day? The Greeny Lake Volunteer Fire Department has come up with the idea of a fishing derby for Monday, February 17. The derby will cover both lakes, Greeny and Timothy. The start time for the derby is 8 a.m. and the finish time will be 3 p.m. Cost of registration is $10 with children under 12 free, Registration and weigh-in will take place at the Greeny Lake VFD Fire Hall. There will be cash prizes offered for the longest trout and the longest Kokanee.
Lac La Hache is a very caring community. One of the things that happened in January was a house fire on Forbes Road, personal possessions were lost as well as a pickup. People have stepped up offering monetary help and then with offers of blankets, furniture and other items required. The Lac La Hache Thrift Store is also available to help with any items required in case of emergencies.
One of our locals also has health problems and is in the hospital in Kelowna. Tawney Anderson and her mom Pam King have been away from the community for about a month. There is a fundraiser planned for Feb. 15 which will be hosted by Bev Fry. There will be a spaghetti dinner with all the fixings at 5 p.m. at the Pioneer Centre. Entrance will be by donation and there is an opportunity to get into a draw for baskets of goodies as well as a 50/50 draw. Come on out and show your support for this family in need. It sounds like Pam and Tawney will be away for at least several more weeks.
The Lac La Hache Community Club will be having a short regular monthly meeting on Feb. 18 at the Community Hall starting at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be immediately followed by the Annual General Meeting where there will be elections for the directors whose terms are expiring and then more voting to add new directors. The goal will be to have 11 directors in 2026. If you are a member in good standing, please come and be ready to vote.
This frigid February weather has caused problems for us at the hall. Even though the hall was checked each day the furnaces quit working causing the sinks, toilets, and pipes to freeze. Fortunately, this was discovered by the contractor who was dropping off the vinyl planking for the kitchen floor upgrade. Work started on Feb. 10 and will be completed by Feb. 15. Everyone is excited about the new facelift the hall is getting, and the main hall floors will be restored starting on Feb. 24 and completed by March 3.
The Mount Timothy Ski Hill is in full operation and regular hours are Thursday to Sunday. Traffic on those days can be quite busy, stay alert, and keep an eye out for the travellers.
The Rolf Zeis arena sure is seeing mega action these days. The Old Timers hockey league have their regular practice days, elementary students come out on Friday afternoons, drop-in hockey on Friday nights and public skating on Sundays. Five female hockey teams used the arena for their tournament on Jan. 17 and 18. All the teams had fun and were extremely thankful to all the volunteers, refs, timekeepers, and organizers.
There were 44 people out for the crib tournament held on January 25 at the Pioneer Centre. Everyone had a wonderful time and enjoyed the spaghetti lunch. This is an extremely popular event and there will be another one held on Feb. 22.
The Flea Market held on Jan. 26 was fun even though traffic was not quite as busy as usual. You just never know what treasures you will find, there were four cute puppies outside that were looking for their forever homes and the good news is two of them did! The next Flea Market will be on Feb. 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Community Hall. Stop in and check to see what is on the menu for lunch and all the wares displayed by the vendors. See you there!
