Members of the 70 Mile arena committee and other volunteers put a lot of work into rejuvenating the arena next to the 70 Mile Club Hall in 2024. They got rid of the trees that were growing on the arena floor and hanging over the fences, removed rocks and sticks in the arena floor and replaced rotten fence rails and harrowed the arena floor so people could ride horses safely. Eventually the committee purchased a harrow for the arena floor. The committee is looking forward to having fun events and equine clinics at the arena in 2025. (Ken Alexander photo)

The very active arena committee is ready to add activities in 2025 after a year of rejuvenation of the old arena next to the 70 Mile Community Club Hall.

“We added many new horse riding members to our 70 Mile Community Club in 2024 and want to plan events for all to participate in with their equine partners,” arena committee lead Lori Spencer said, adding “Our members had a great 2024 riding season and we are looking for more fun starting in the spring.”

She noted the committee is currently planning events.

Spencer said they are looking to see what type of activities their equine members would like to participate in. It could be gymkhanas, fun obstacle days, dressage trials, ranch-style show classes, drill team practice, long trail rides with the Back Country riders, she said, adding or all of the above.

She said the club is looking into whether it can coordinate with the other local equine clubs in a series of events.

This would mean a rider can compete for year-end high points and prizes, she added.

“We are currently booking three clinicians for 2025. "We are hoping to host an Extreme Cowboy Challenge clinic, a Ranch Riding Clinic and a Mountain Trail Clinic."

Spencer adds the arena has available dates for other groups to rent and plan their equine events, which would bring in extra funds for the upkeep of the arena.

She added there will be arena improvements this spring, including the installation of water hydrants for watering the arena and the horses.

The committee also plans to improve the outhouse facilities.

“We encourage everyone to join our club and get on the email list to stay informed of activities. Please email Spencer at 70milehouseriding@gmail.com.

“The cost to use the arena is a $25 club membership for the year. We have 10 overnight or day-use 14-foot by 14-foot paddocks available.

“We hope to make the 70 Mile Community Riding Arena a hub of equine activities in 2025.”

Mail strike information

70 Mile and area residents and businesses will not be receiving mail and packages at the 70 Mile House Post office while the Canada Post strike is on, said 70 Mile House Postmaster Lisa Schramm.

She noted the Post Office is open, but she isn't receiving any mail, ad mail or parcels during the Canada Post strike.

We can't “accept any mail, or parcels, except for a prepaid return parcel.”

Schramm added the local Post Office can't accept mailed newspapers either.

A 100 Mile Free Press employee said the 70 Mile General Store has agreed to hold the newspapers for subscribers to pick up.

Subscribers would be wise to call the store at 250-456-7744 to make sure the newspapers are at the store before they travel to the store to pick them up.
