In loving memory ~
John Lawson Kite, 93 yrs. old, died peacefully in the home of his son, Greg Kite, in Lacombe Alberta, on January 22, 2023. He had moved to Lacombe from his home in 108 Mile Ranch B.C at the end of November 2022, due to declining health.
John Kite was an accomplished pilot who began his career in the RCAF in 1953 and served for over 20 years with various squadrons, including the 437 Transport Squadron in Trenton Ontario. He became a veteran after flying many airlift missions with the UN during the Congo Crisis of the 1960s. After retiring from the air force, he continued his flying career as a flight instructor, civil aviation inspector with Transport Canada and chief pilot with several companies until he was 69 yrs. old. He continued flying his own airplanes until he was 78 yrs. old. John was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed canoeing, boating, fishing, hunting and camping in his RV until just last year. He was active in his church and served an 18-month mission at the age of 80 along with his wife Cathie.
He is survived by his sister Doreen Shanks, sons Greg Kite (Outi) and Philip Kite (Gale), his daughter-in-law Joyce Kite, and 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife Elizabeth (Betty) Mortimer, his second wife Catherine Macdonald Glosli and his oldest son Bruce Kite who passed away from ALS in 2019.
John was cared for in his final months by his son Greg and daughter-in-law Outi in their home with the support of many wonderful caregivers from Janis Care Services. The family would like to thank Janis Care Services, Veterans Affairs Canada and Alberta Health Services Home Care nurses who were all very supportive with equipment and resources to make his homecare as comfortable as possible.
