It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother Joan at the age of 89.
Joan was born in Kentville, Nova Scotia in 1933. At the age of 17 when her mother died suddenly of a heart attack, she stepped up to care for her youngest brother Jack while working full-time and attending business college. Kentville is where she met the love of her life, Clare. After a few years and 3 kids they moved to Ontario and lived there until heading to BC in 1964 with now 4 kids in a 1956 Pontiac and everything they owned tied to the roof.
Mom was a hard worker. She raised 4 kids and spent lots of time with her grandkids. She loved to garden and cook while also enjoying many years working in business administration. Many people have enjoyed her fabulous fish and chips, cabbage rolls and her wonderful perogies. She always looked forward to hosting a BBQ in the summer for her friends and neighbours on the back deck.
You always knew where you stood with mom, but you also knew you were always welcome at her house and her table. Sadly, during the last year as her health started to fail, she was not able to visit with her neighbours as much as she would have liked to. She really missed this.
Joan is predeceased by her husband of 60 years Clare, son Michael and grandson Brent. She is survived by her daughters, Cindy (Katchmar) and Julie (Kwiatkowski), son Richard and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Thanks to the wonderful staff at 100 Mile House General Hospital for their kindness and the excellent care they provided to mom in her final days and for the support and kindness they showed me during the many hours I spent there. Their compassion and empathy in these challenging times is to be applauded.
I'll miss you mom.
You weren't only my mother, but my best friend. You were the person I always knew would be there for me with open arms.
