March 5, 1944 - October 14, 2020
Gerry passed away peacefully, in the presence of his family, after a long and courageous battle with his health. Gerry had heroic and indomitable resolve to live and experience his life despite the daily challenges he faced. Gerry will be forever remembered as a strong, loving, passionate, humorous, and charismatic man who lived for his family, friends, and the simple pleasures in life.
Born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, as a young boy Gerry immigrated to Canada in 1952 with his family, eventually settling in Vancouver where he attended school. Yearning for adventure and greater purpose, as a young man Gerry proudly served in both the Canadian and American Armed Forces. There he developed fierce conviction and lived by core values that greatly influenced his life.
These times undoubtedly laid the foundation for Gerry's remarkable strength, resilience, and will to never give up a fight worth fighting for.
Hard-working and creative, Gerry had a knack for building. Later, he worked alongside his father and brother-in-law in construction in the Fraser Valley. After injuries took their toll, Gerry put his organizational skills and leadership qualities to work, successfully managing a local nightclub.
In 1967, Gerry and Kathy fell in love and the rest, as they say, is history. They settled in 100 Mile House in 1974 and continued to raise their young family.
He built a home surrounded by forests where he'd enjoy exploring and building forts with the kids. The Cariboo seemed to bring the best of every season and Gerry was able to enjoy and instill in his children a love and passion for the great outdoors and adventure. Gerry loved to go fishing, boating, camping, and hunting, ride the motorcycles or snowmobiles, and go for long drives in the old convertible.
Very much a family man, Gerry would look forward to weekends often devoted to sports and leisure along with his wife and kids. He supported his son in minor hockey, loving the role of coach and time box keeper.
Gerry served as a tireless volunteer for the local Food Bank for many years and, as a proud Veteran, for a time Gerry was President of the local Legion Branch #260. Gerry worked through to retirement as a diligent manager of Pioneer Haven. Gerry was extremely curious and well- read.
When his health began slowing him down, Gerry's life shifted. A sentimental soul, Gerry spent more time relishing classic movies and tv, and listening to the golden oldies that brought him pleasure and kept the past alive.
He became an avid armchair traveler and documentary specialist, eager to collect and share highlights, facts and his opinions with others. Gerry had a penchant for tinkering with gadgets and new tools. He navigated his way through his first laptop and numerous devices that he found entertaining and engaging.
Gradually, Gerry saw more relaxed days with Kathy on the backyard swing or cozying up watching a good movie together. Gerry continued to radiate light, love and a sense of hope to those who were near to his heart, even during immense personal struggles with his health. He was devoted to Kathy, the love of his life, and forever grateful for her tenderness, care, and companionship for over 50 years.
Gerry's memory will be treasured by his family members, including his wife, Kathy, and his children: Kim (Rob), Chris (Marnie), and Eve (Frantz), as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, friends, and acquaintances. Gerry is predeceased by his beloved daughter, Corinna, and parents, Gerry and Eve.
Our family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. K. Geerts and Dr. L. Klopper, as well as the many health care workers and emergency responders in our community who've supported Gerry over the years. A gathering to honour Gerry's life will take place later in the spring.
Donations in Gerry's memory can be made to the 100 Mile Hospital Palliative Care unit.
