David passed away peacefully at the age of 85 in the Florentine Seniors Residence in Merritt, B.C.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Wendy; sister-in-law Patricia Hamblin; nieces, Claire Hamblin and Anita (Matthew) Favelle; and was predeceased by his brother, Michael Hamblin.

David was born and grew up in London, England. As a young man he served in the British army in Malaya. An intense interest in mathematics and physics drew him to start a career as a research assistant in the British National Physics Laboratory, and to complete a bachelor's degree in science, and begin a master's degree through night courses, while working full-time at the Laboratory.

In 1962, an opportunity arose to cross the Atlantic as a crew member on a sailing ship. David put his science career on hold and sailed to the Caribbean. After making his way to Canada, he decided to stay and take up teaching for the opportunities it offered to live a more rural life.

He married Wendy in 1966 and then taught in Ucluelet and in Salmon Arm before moving to 100 Mile House, where he chose to live for the next 47 years.

David will be fondly remembered by his friends, colleagues and students for his delight in knowledge of all kinds, and his warm and witty approach to teaching and to conversations.

A memorial service will be held at St. Timothy's Anglican Church on Saturday, January 13 at 2:00 p.m.
