Forever in our Memories
It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of our beloved Bonnie.
Bonnie (Lea Belec) was born in New Westminster, BC and grew up in White Rock. Survived by her husband and constant companion, Rob; brother Barry Belec and sister (Chyrlle) Lynn Carruth, both of White Rock and predeceased by older sister Carol Levesque of Val Des Bois, Quebec and parents Howard and Pauline Belec.
Bonnie was in the first class of women to graduate from RCMP training in Regina in the early 70's and stayed an RCMP member for about six years. After leaving the RCMP, Bonnie started work at Super Value on Davie Street in Vancouver as a cashier until 1989 when she needed to step aside due to the onset of Multiple Sclerosis. Her customers loved her and would wait in her line because Bonnie talked to them and was interested in their stories. This is also where she met her future husband Rob, partly due to the number of pastries he would purchase from the Super Value bakery on his way home from work ...... from Bonnie who also worked in the bakery.
During the 70's and 80's Bonnie spent a lot of time with Rob; travelling, sailing the gulf islands, flying in gliders as a passenger, skiing, as well as taking up embroidery and painting. Then in the early days of her MS, volunteering to take young children on tours through the Vancouver aquarium. Later years at home in her wheelchair at Lac La Hache, saw Bonnie practising jewellery beading with a friend, sometimes selling pieces to her home care staff, who though a captive audience, appreciated her jewellery work.
Bonnie struggled with MS for 33+ years. But it never diminished her enjoyment of meeting and chatting with the people who crossed her path. Nor did she forget names.
These last few years were hard for Bonnie during her stay in Long Term Care, here in 100 Mile House, with MS. The staff of Fischer Place are to be thanked for doing all they could to keep my wife comfortable.
She was a light in my life, someone special, someone who could make you smile.
Bonnie was 69 years young.
