Sooke School District budget clears its latest hurdle

Kindergarten-Grade 1 split classes on increase as SD62 address $3.5 million deficit

The Sooke School Board passed first reading of the district’s 2014-15 budget Tuesday night, a document that calls for jobs and resource cuts to make up for a projected deficit of nearly $3.5 million.

Few changes have been made since an April 15 public meeting on the budget challenges. However, the Elements middle school program for special needs students will remain, and more elementary schools are slated to have Kindergarten/Grade 1 split classes, for a total of six.

Which schools will have split classes has yet to be decided.

The budget goes to committee of the whole meeting on May 13, when the public can provide more input. The document will be considered for adoption at the board meeting on May 27.
