The next section the Communities in Bloom (CiB) judges will be looking at when they visit 100 Mile House later this month will be "Tree/Urban Forest Management."
This category includes efforts made by municipal, corporate and private citizens in regards to urban forestry.
New plantings, heritage trees and woodlots, as well as the preservation of trees and succession planting will be analyzed.
Business evaluations will be on design, species diversity and planting of trees in landscapes.
The judges will also consider programs for watering, pruning and inclusion of diversified, hardy species planted around the businesses.
Judging of residential sites will focus on the same areas, as well as best practices for maintaining these trees and plantings.
The judges are coming to 100 Mile on July 19 and we are looking for any volunteers to join in welcoming them at the barbecue in Centennial Park that evening. Please call us at 250-706-2044, or send us an e-mail to 100milecib@gmail.com if you can help in the planning and preparation.
This would be a great event for a community group to show its inclusion and support for a program built around community involvement and civic pride.
Because part of our judgment is about participation of social clubs, organized clubs, individuals, and service and citizen groups, this is really a great time to start bragging about the benefits of living in a small town.
The 100 Mile House Garden Club will be going around doing a pre-judging event during the week of July 11. Remember to keep the nominations coming in so we know where to send them.

Residential contest categories include: Best Balcony/Patio; Best Herb/Vegetable Garden; Best Xeriscape (dry landscape); Best Front Yard Design; Best Backyard; Tidiest Block; and Best Overall.
