Managing garbage in the Cariboo Regional District

Sperling Hansen and Associates recently reported on some potential for changes and associated impacts for managing garbage in the Cariboo Regional District.

The report was presented to the Solid Waste Management Plan Advisory Committee and included some assessments of the current program's operating efficiencies, as well as potential options for recycling and composting.

While it revealed a potential cost savings by increasing the density of loads at transfer stations, the current bins would need to be replaced by larger, open-top ones to facilitate compaction.

The company also indicated costs could be cut by the closure of small landfills or conversion to transfer stations.

A public consultation will likely occur sometime this fall.
