Teachers’ strike closes classrooms

School District 27 schools closed Monday through Wednesday, students asked to stay home

Parents are advised that schoolteachers across the province will hold a three-day strike beginning Monday.

School District 27 superintendent Diane Wright says Cariboo-Chilcotin students are being asked not to attend public school March 5-7 when teachers are not working.

She adds buses will not be running.

The buildings will be open with the principals in attendance to handle immediate supervision for any students who did not receive notice of the situation.

However, the parents of those students will be contacted wherever possible and asked to arrange for pickup of their children.

While Education Minister George Abbott indicated all the schools will be open and students supervised for parents unable to secure alternate arrangements, Wright says SD27 principals will not be able to deal with this volume of students.

However, she advises the school daycare centres will be open, but recommends parents call ahead to confirm other programs not run by the school district, such as StrongStart and Ready, Set, Learn.

Wright says she does not know if unionized school support staff will be in the schools during the teachers strike activity.

Classes will resume on March 8.
