The South Cariboo and Lac la Hache Official Community Plans are ready for public hearing after passing their first and second readings at the Cariboo Regional District board meeting on Friday, Aug. 24.

Previous Official Community Plans for the South Cariboo and Lac la Hache were created in 1996 and 1997 respectively.

Al Richmond, the electoral director for Lac la Hache, said in a phone interview Tuesday that a modernization of language and philosophies are reflected in the new plans.

“It’s a vision document. It’s not set in stone,” but a potential developer can refer to the Official Community Plan to see the public’s “aspirations” and “visions” for the community, he said.

If a community member takes issue with any part of the plans, they can bring it up in public hearing and it can go back to the board, if necessary.

“This is the time now to get it out to the general public and review those sections and see what people agree with the conclusions and the positions that were put forward by the working group.”

Richmond said he doesn’t foresee any parts of the plans being controversial.

If they were, he said he imagines it would have already been identified and dealt with within the group of roughly 10 people who participated in the plan’s development.

One recurring theme that came out of the plan for Lac la Hache was the protection of the lake, he said.

At this point, Richmond said he is happy with what is being put forward and hopes for a good turnout at the public hearings.

“Whether they agree with it or they don’t agree with it,” he said people showing up and participating in the process is “always a positive thing.”

Public hearings will be advertised as soon as they are scheduled. You can read both plans in full at cariboord.ca.
