Referendum: Barnett goes on record

Responding to the Jan. 12 Free Press front-page article, headlined Freeston: recall a go, Barnett’s in their sights, Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett said last week that she is sick and tired of hearing about her pending recall.

In the article, Recall Cariboo-Chilcotin Campaign spokesman Eric Freeston said media reports that Barnett’s recall had been postponed were false and had been misconstrued because of statements being made by a Fight-HST organizer.

He noted the only way his group would pull out of the recall process would be if the B.C. Liberals cancelled the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), or moved the referendum date up and provided guarantees that the government would follow through on its promise to do the bidding of the electorate.

Barnett said the public said it wanted a referendum because British Columbians didn’t have a say on the HST. “OK, now they’re having a say.”

Noting Freeston told the Free Press it doesn’t matter what [B.C. Liberal candidates say about the referendum] because it’s non-binding, Barnett said she wanted to go on the public record.

“I stand by what we said about what the referendum would do. If the people say they want to get rid of [the HST] during the referendum and the government doesn’t

abide by those wishes, I’ll become an independent MLA.”
