Interlakes waste transfer station fire contained quickly

quick response limits fire damage

Thanks to fast initial attack and the hard work of firefighters in the Cariboo region, a fire that started on Sept. 27 was contained at just over one hectare.

The fire was reported by the Deka Lake Volunteer Fire Department shortly after 3 p.m. At that time, the fire had spread from the Interlakes refuse site into the surrounding forest fuels and was moving toward Judson Road, approximately 2 kilometres from the head of the fire.

Wildfire Management Branch personnel worked with members of the Deka Lake and Interlakes volunteer fire departments to contain the fire quickly.

The Wildfire Management Branch dispatched an air tanker group, a helicopter, one piece of heavy machinery, a water truck and 17 firefighters.

The fire was in the mop-up stage the next day and 10 personnel from the Cariboo Fire Centre worked to suppress hot spots within the perimeter of the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
