Members of the Forest Grove community came out in force to support longtime community member Ron Lister last weekend.
On Sunday, March 2 a fundraiser was held at the Forest Grove Legion Branch 261 to raise money for Lister, an avid community volunteer and retired volunteer firefighter. Forest Grove Legion director John Drescher, who helped organize the event, said the response was nothing short of extraordinary.
"Thanks to the generous contributions of Tasco, numerous local businesses, and the incredible support from Ron’s friends, acquaintances, and community members, over $13,000 was raised to aid in his recovery," Drescher said.
Lister was reported missing on Feb.3, 2025, during a cold snap that saw temperatures well below -20C for several days. According to the 100 Mile House RCMP, he had suffered a medical incident and gotten lost near No Name Lake for several hours. During his time exposed to the elements, Lister suffered frostbite and was ultimately transferred to a hospital in Kelowna to be closer to his children.
With Lister in the hospital, his employer Tasco Supplies Ltd. started up a collection to help support him during his time of need. Meanwhile several of his friends in Forest Grove decided to run a fundraiser hosted by the Forest Grove Legion including the Forest Grove Volunteer Fire Department, whom Lister is a former member of. During the fundraiser, the fire department ran a coin toss and 50/50 draw, the Legion sold food and drinks and a silent auction was held, with all proceeds being donated to Lister.
Drescher said he was especially touched to see people travel from Merritt, the Okanagan and beyond to show their support. He noted that Lister's journey has reminded everyone that when you lead with kindness and compassion, that same love returns to you 10 fold in your time of need.
"It is heartwarming to see how our community comes together when one of our own is in need," Drescher said. "The Forest Grove Legion is honoured to have played a role in supporting Ron, and we extend our deepest gratitude to all who contributed."
He added that Ron's family are deeply grateful for this support and that words cannot express his own appreciation for everyone who has supported Lister throughout this challenging time. Drescher also thanked the 100 Mile House RCMP and South Cariboo Search and Rescue for their heroic efforts in saving Lister during his time of need.
