Crash on Highway 97 near Lac la Hache last night was fatal

‘Speed has been ruled out as a contributing factor and everyone was wearing seatbelts’

RCMP have confirmed that the crash on Highway 97 was fatal.

“Last evening, Dec. 6, 2018 at approximately 4:55 p.m. 100 Mile House RCMP and Cariboo Chilcotin Regional Traffic Services attended a fatal crash on Highway 97 about three kilometres north of Lac la Hache,” according to Cpl. Mike Halskov.

A southbound vehicle with three occupants left the roadway and rolled, he says.

“The driver, a man in his fifties, died as a result of the collision. The two passengers escaped with only minor injuries. Early indications are that the driver took evasive action to avoid wildlife that was crossing the highway and lost control.”

Road and weather conditions were good, according to Halskov, with the temperature at -10 C and conditions being dry.

“Speed has been ruled out as a contributing factor and everyone was wearing seatbelts.”

The highway was closed while police investigated and reopened just after 8 p.m.

Cariboo Chilcotin Regional Traffic Services (CCRTS) and the BC Coroners’ Service are continuing the investigation and no further information is available at this time. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to call CCRTS in 100 Mile House at 250-395-2456.
