Community and Safeway raised $3,000 last month

Local Food Bank benefits from in-store and Free Skate fundraising

The 100 Mile House community has once again proven its generous spirit, according to the manager of the local Safeway, where nearly $3,000 was raised for the food bank last month.

The funds were raised by a combination of collecting $2 donations at the checkout, and by selling $5 and $10 hampers, manager Sean Watson tells the 100 Mile House Free Press.

“This community blows my mind every time we do something like this,” Watson says.

“There are so many people within this community who are always up for helping out others. They’ll gladly make that donation to make sure other people in the community are benefiting.”

Watson notes resident Dipak Ranchod and his family once again donated $500 at the Safeway-sponsored Free Skate in December, and says the successful event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the crew from Canlan Ice Sports.

He also made note of the “unbelievable” work done each week by the 100 Mile House Food Bank, which helps dozens of families and individuals year round.

The grocery store will likely keep up its tradition of fundraising campaigns for the food bank throughout the year; they are generally held around Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Watson says he looks forward to the generous support from residents he has grown accustomed to.

“I’ve never seen a community that pays it forward like the way this one does.”
