Commercial waste tips the scales

Fees increased, sites added for construction material

Tipping fees for commercial loads of wood and demolition/construction (DLC) waste begin Feb. 1 at the Cariboo Regional District's Interlakes and Watch Lake landfills and the Lone Butte transfer station.

On the same day, tipping fees at the current site accepting wood and DLC, the South Cariboo Landfill (100 Mile House), will be increased.

Mixed commercial waste accepted there will rise from $25 to $40 per tonne on Feb. 1, but for the most part, it will no longer be subject to minimum fees.

Asbestos waste rates at this large, central landfill will also rise, from $150 to $200 per tonne, with a minimum commercial charge of $200.

Cariboo Regional District (CRD) chair Al Richmond says the South Cariboo Landfill Fees and Charges Bylaw was adjusted to better reflect the actual costs associated with disposing of materials in the landfill.

He noted the new tipping fee schedule provides commercial waste producers a financial incentive to recycle more materials, such as tonnes of cardboard that can be recycled for free.

On Jan. 6, the CRD sent out letters to current South Cariboo Landfill commercial account holders, notifying them of the changes and also encouraging them to recycle as much as possible.

The same day, letters were sent to known users of the new sites accepting commercial waste, explaining that only smaller loads will be accepted and tipping fees will be calculated by material type and volume, since there are no scales.

Commercial vehicles, or vehicles hauling commercial waste, are required to not only pay tipping fees at these sites, but must also register ahead for an account, based on approved credit.

If folks intend to take advantage of the new commercial waste facilities, they will need to present the attendant with their Bill Account Code, driver's name and signature. These will then be recorded on a ticket along with the licence plate number, material type(s) and tipping fees, with a copy given to the driver.

A fees invoice will then follow by mail to the account holder on a monthly basis.
