A charity run for Owen Ross organized by Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School on Sept. 29 raised $1,870.

The event saw 550 participants run in 100 Mile House to benefit the local Grade 8 student who was diagnosed with a very rare form of leukaemia this summer.

“Students were highly engaged in the event, as demonstrated by their fundraising, their physical participation, and also the add-on activities they took on, such as making an enormous get-well-soon card, making a video of the event and holding several bake sales,” says teacher Dave Henderson.

“We were also happy to have participation by our School District #27 superintendent, Mark Thiessen, as well as representatives from the school board and District of 100 Mile House council.”

Owen and his mom, Nicole, are currently staying at Ronald McDonald House while he undergoes out-patient chemotherapy treatment in Vancouver.

The side-effects of the treatment, nausea and fatigue, are pretty rough, but aside from that Owen is doing well, explains his dad, Cameron Ross.

“He's reacting well to everything. He's starting to work on his homework down there. He's not having to stay [in hospital] overnight, which is good.”

Meanwhile, the community support has been tremendous, Cameron adds.

“The encouragement we're getting from the community is incredible. It's really made Nicole, myself and Owen feel really good.”
