UPDATE (1:30 p.m.)

BC Hydro workers have restored power to 95 per cent of the customers who experienced outages in the 100 Mile House area this morning according to spokesperson Kevin Aquino.

Approximately 1,300 customers were without power at one point, he said. Now only 93 customers remain without power.

“We’ve been making significant progress.”

Aquino said weather was the main culprit for the onslaught of outages this morning.

He said heavy snow causes “significant stress to the tree,” causing branches to fall on wires.

This results in crews having to remove branches from wires, restring wires, or in some cases even fully replace power poles.

For customers who are still in the dark, he said crews are on route.

Aquino said BC Hydro has in-house meteorologists to track weather systems and give them a heads up when a storm like this is is rolling in.

“That allows us to be prepared and we’re able to wrap up our crews and call centre agents in the event that power does go out.”

Even with preparation, he said it’s still difficult to predict how long an outage may last, so they encourage customers to be prepared with flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, water and food.
