Leon Chretien moved to the South Cariboo seven years ago, buying an existing business. He chose 100 Mile House for the vast outdoors and church community.

Question: When did you initially get involved with politics and how long have you been involved?

Answer: Back in 1993, I decided that some issues needed to be heard in the federal election campaign so I threw my hat in as an independent candidate. It was an interesting experience and I felt one day I may need to be involved again.

Shortly after moving to 100 Mile House, I joined the Chamber board of directors and found out that it was actually a political group and there I was, back in politics.

Q: What made you want to run for councillor? Is it your first time?

This is my first time running for Council. I have been asked for the past few years or longer to run for mayor. That is out of my scope right now as I don’t have time for the ribbon cutting and events while maintaining my business and other board responsibilities in the community. I feel that time at the council table makes a lot of sense as there is equal opportunity to represent the constituents in this position as compared to mayor.

Q: What are some of the more important issues in the 100 Mile House District?

There are many issues that are important to the people of our area. I am running to discover and represent all of them with a time of discovery as to their overall community merits. With that said, I believe that housing is a very big concern and opportunity for our area and especially the District of 100 Mile House.

Q: What do you wish to accomplish during your term if elected?

I wish to learn what concerns the people have and not just what concerns me from my perspective in life. We are, by nature, all the centre of our own world; but, as an elected official it is of utmost importance to be a listener of the people, not of the mob per se, but truly of the people. This is a democracy within a democracy.

Q: Why should the people of 100 Mile House vote for you?

Balance. I will bring balance and understanding. One of the things I have always taken seriously is trying to understand where others are coming from. Perspective is everything to individuals and it is our job as elected officials to balance the needs and perspectives within the overall community for short-term, mid-term, and long-term.

Q: How can supporters get in touch with you or find out more about your platform?

Questions can be poised at my Facebook persona: Leon Chretien for Councillor and I will try to answer or take your concern to the council chamber with me if I am so fortunate as to be elected.

I will work my best to represent the people of the area both today and into the future. A decision at the polls today sets the stage for what is to come for many years. Vote for balance, vote for community, vote Leon on Oct. 20th.
