The 100 Mile Curling Club held their annual Doubles Bonspiel over the weekend.
The Double Bonspiel event took place between Feb. 7 and 9 at the 100 Mile Curling Club near the South Cariboo Rec Centre. It saw around 20 local teams participate against each other in a competitive yet friendly event which involved three events an A event, B event and C event.
"It's a way to show our skill and have fun at the same time," explained Barb Byrne, who is in charge of registration for the 100 Mile House Curling Club.
According to Byrne, double bonspiels are different from the typical bonspiel, as they involve only two people instead of the usual four, alongside other rule changes.
"There are only five rocks," stated Byrne, in contrast to the usual eight rocks used in regular curling.
Byrne said that the double bonspiels have been growing in popularity amongst curlers.
"A lot of couples can play," Byrne explained. "They do have some during the afternoon and early evening, and that's appealing to people."
Byrne expanded on why doubles would be so appealing, noting that it helps with knowing your partner a little bit better.
"We actually work closely with your partner, and you kind of understand each other a little better," Byrne explained.
Two of the participants of the tournament agreed with Byrne. Lynn Gerwing and Jean Dall both competed in the doubles bonspiel, albeit on different teams.
"It's fast, and it only takes two players," Dall said. "With the doubles, you can just come out with a partner, and because we play open doubles, you don't have to be with a man and a woman. You can be two men or two women, doesn't matter."
Gerwing agrees with the sentiment, stating that doubles participation has been growing with the membership of the 100 Mile Curling Club.
Overall, everyone felt good about the bonspiel, including both Dall and Gerwing. Dall said it was "too much fun to miss" while Gerwing said that "we wouldn't be anywhere else but here."
The 100 Mile Curling Club plans on hosting a Ladies' Bonspiel between Feb. 28 and Mar. 2 of this year.
