Chilcotin River Landslide evacuation area downgraded to alert

An area near the Chilcotin River Landslide has been downgraded from an evacuation order to an alert.

The evacuation orders in the Chilcotin River Landslide Area are now being downgraded to an alert by the Cariboo Regional District (CRD).

Evacuation orders were issued previously, one for what the CRD is referring to as the Chilcotin River Landslide Area and one they are calling Chilcotin River Landslide Area 3. They are both being downgraded to an evacuation alert.

The CRD Emergency Operations Centre are now referring to the alert as the Chilcotin River Landslide Area evacuation alert and have posted a new map of the area along the river, up to the confluence with the Fraser River.

Effective immediately residents are allowed to return to the area. More information about re-entering the area following an evacuation area can be found in the Guide to Re-Entry After an Evacuation. Please watch for livestock and wildlife on roads.

To view the interactive map on the CRD website, go to: https://cariboo.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=bcde372fd38841ee97d67e12f32f7fe5&wmode=transparent

Be aware that landslide and river assessment is continuous and ongoing in the area. The CRD asks all members of the public to avoid interfering with any monitoring activity and watch for the potential for additional slides or flooding.

Unstable rocks on nearby slopes injured a hiker in the area on Aug. 13.

The CRD said it tries to contact all property owners and residents who have been impacted by damages to their properties, however it is not always possible.

Please watch for livestock and wildlife on roads, as fences may have been damaged.

Residents must be prepared in the event that the area receives a future evacuation order or alert on short notice. Local governments may not have time to go door to door should a new evacuation order be issued.

To prepare for your return to the area:

Monitor reliable news sources for information on evacuation orders and locations of Reception Centres and the CRD’s channels on Facebook and cariboord.ca.
Residents returning to the area are encouraged to register for the Cariboo Chilcotin Emergency Notification System to receive a text, call or email regarding Evacuation Alerts and Orders.
