A stroll down 100 Mile House's main drag, Birch Avenue

Right in the heart of 100 Mile House is Birch Avenue, a delightful corridor resplendent in the summertime with huge, overflowing flower baskets, colourful town flags and blossoming trees.

This main street through downtown remains lovely through all of the seasons with many colourful, hand-painted murals and log detail.

Take a leisurely stroll along Birch Avenue while you window shop and soak up the South Cariboo sunshine and hospitality.

Step into one of the numerous shops and restaurants for a pleasant experience in friendly, small-town service, tempting treasures and tasty meals.

A mere block east of Cariboo Highway 97, Birch Avenue boasts affordable gifts and local arts and crafts. You will also find all of your household, sporting goods, clothing, health, legal and financial needs and much more.

Events at the 100 Mile House Community Hall provide some excellent evening entertainment, including a Banker's Variety Show in March, which always evokes riotous laughter.

Family fun is foremost in the minds of organizers of several annual events on Birch Avenue.

Such is the case for Western Week, which kicks off May 15 with the ABBA Arrival/Dreams concert at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre. The fun-filled week culminates May 23 with the 15th Annual South Cariboo Rough Stock Rodeo at the Outriders Rodeo Grounds behind the arena. (For the Free Press's story on Western Week, click here.)

During Western Week, residents and local business owners are encouraged to dress in their best western attire, and most businesses get into the Wild West theme and decorate their stores.

May 22 is a huge family-fun day that is sponsored and organized by the South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce and Birch Avenue is a beehive of activity.

The day starts with the tasty pancake breakfast from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

The Little Britches Rodeo Parade follows at 10 a.m.

Immediately after the parade, the Children's Streetfest goes from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and

Birch Avenue, between First and Third streets, will be packed with activities for the young and the young at heart. There will be a lot of colour, entertainment and food vendors to keep everyone happy.

Renown throughout the province and beyond, the hugely popular Hot July Nights Car & Bike Show on July 9-11 brings vintage vehicles, hot rods and motorcycles to town for a "Show 'n Shine & Swap Meet" and a lot of related activities. Bring the children along to ogle some pristine vintage cars, trucks and motorbikes, while you enjoy live entertainment and munch on delectable food items from the street vendors.
