Mounties in Quesnel arrested a man they say is a repeat offender with a history of violence after he attempted to flee from police.

RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle near Spears Road and Heinzelman Road on Oct. 2 at around 9 p.m.
An RCMP news release says they then attempted to conduct a traffic stop of the vehicle but it drove away at high speed. Mounties say it nearly struck two vehicles as it fled, prompting them to not pursue it and maintain sight due to safety concerns.

The release says police then identified the driver as a 30-year-old man suspected of a break and enter on Oct. 1. RCMP say they made another attempt to stop the vehicle but it avoided the road block and fled south on Hwy 97.

Mounties say the vehicle crashed into a civilian vehicle near Maple Drive and Hwy 97 and the driver fled the vehicle on foot. They were then able to arrest the man after a brief foot pursuit.

The driver of the civilian vehicle was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The suspect remains in custody and will appear before the courts later today.

"These types of incidents can cause a significant risk to the public," said Sgt. Clay Kronebusch. "The suspect driver of this vehicle showed no regard for the safety of others on the roads."
