BC Highway Patrol arrests two while targeting enforcement on Hwy 97

The four-day targeting led to over 100 speeding tickets being issued

BC Highway Patrol targeted enforcement on Highway 97 from 83 Mile to Hixon between Aug. 15 and Aug. 18. Over the four days officers from Williams Lake, Quesnel and 100 Mile House served 151 violation tickets. Those violations included vehicle restraints, distracted driving, defective vehicles and over 100 speeding tickets, an RCMP news release said.

Four vehicles were impounded for what officers said was excessive speeding. Those vehicles include a red pickup truck officers said was going 148km/hour in a 100km/hour zone, a black SUV officers said was going 155 km/hour in a 100 km/hour zone and a black Jeep officers said was going 161 km/hour in a 100 km/hour zone. The release adds the Jeep was uninsured. 

"Our teams take the job of making our highways safer together seriously. The enforcement that was conducted over the weekend had a positive impact on the communities that they not only serve but reside in," said Sgt. Jason Nash from Northern Highway Patrol. "As we approach the final long weekend of the summer, we will continue to target high-risk drivers with the end goal of eliminating serious injury and fatal collisions on our highways."

The officers impounded three vehicles with drivers they said were impaired, those drivers were also prohibited from driving for 90 days. They also impounded the vehicles of six drivers they said were prohibited and arrested two drivers on outstanding warrants. Both were released with a future court date.
