The District of 100 Mile House Accessibility Committee heard concerns about safety concerns at the South Cariboo Business Centre's parking lot.
During their meeting at the council office on Sept. 19, Lori Fry brought up some concerns that a citizen, who wished to be anonymous, brought up about the location.
"In the parking lot, it looks like rebar pieces sticking up," Fry stated in a interview with the Free Press, noting that those pieces are about "knee height."
"You know if someone pulls into a parking lot in a hurry because they're late for an appointment - they get out of their car - they're not looking and it's just at the right height where it could take you down."
Donna Barnett, the chairwoman of the 100 Mile House Accessibility Committee, said it is likely that these rebar pieces are there for winter conditions.
"So when you do snow removal, the plow doesn't hit the sidewalk - because the snow is always higher than the sidewalk," Barnett said. "And maybe that's what it's for."
In the meeting, Fry stated that the person had a bit of an accident due to the hazard.
"They encountered it and felt like they were about to tumble down. I guess it was a near miss - let's call it that." Fry said.
At the meeting, Barnett said that she was friends with the owner of the building.
"So I will give him a call - and then I'll report back to the meeting as a citizen and as Chamber of Commerce - to see what he will do - I'm sure he's probably not aware of this exactly," Barnett explained.
It should be noted that this is not a complaint about the building - and that there has never been any sort of complaints - but there have been concerns about parking.
"I'm sure the owners are themselves always working together to try to make it a really safe, welcoming centre," stated Fry.
