Showcase Gallery takes on a decidedly Christmas look during December with a new show, "Home for the Holidays," by members of the Cariboo Artists Guild (CAG).

It's a collection of paintings that warm the soul and bring back memories of Christmases past.

From the 40 members that constitute CAG, contributions for the show come from Katalin Kovacs, Sharon Isaaks, Patsy Granberg, Marilyn Yewell, Kathy Crawshay, Marilyn Beattie, Gisela Gruning, Lianne Heales, Carolyne Herpberger, Reta Munro, Grace Mills-Hodgins and Tom Godin.

Works by member artists spill over to the adjacent Showcase Gallery Cafe, which regularly rotates a display of Cariboo-themed paintings.

CAG treasurer Sharon Isaaks says the past couple of months leading up to Christmas have been busy for the members. They hosted their "Mad Artists Sale" during Moonlight Madness in 100 Mile House where they filled the foyer at the South Cariboo Business Centre with artwork of all descriptions.

Isaaks adds the group realizes the local economy isn't as strong as it could be, so offered items for as low as $3 to make something affordable for everyone.

Many of the artists are also currently selling their works at the Parkside Art Gallery Christmas Bazaar, an ongoing sale that will see the gallery filled with artsy gift items until Dec. 23.

"It's working well for us, with lots of people going through the gallery," says Isaaks.

A special recent highlight, she adds, was a watercolour workshop offered in late October in 100 Mile House by acclaimed British Columbia artist Alex Fong.

"It was a great learning experience and everyone was really pleased."

Isaaks notes she was especially happy she won the Fong painting he created at the workshop and donated for a draw among participants.

CAG recently held its annual general meeting and brought in Estella Erikson as president for the 2011/12 year. Godin is the vice-president and Crawshay is secretary. Granberg will serve as publicity spokesperson.
