Parkside Art Gallery welcomes something a little different to its main showroom at the end of March.

Artist Paula Scott from Dunster, a small town near McBride, opens her new show, Stories & Dreams, with a reception on March 23 at 7 p.m.

The show pieces will come directly from Thompson Rivers University Art Gallery, where they have been on display since Feb. 27 in a show called Narrative, Dream and the Colours in Between: the artwork of Paula Scott.

Local artist Guy Hildebrand will use his own vision, as the show’s curator, which is a bit out of the norm as most Parkside shows in the past have been hung by the artists, themselves.

“It’s a step in a different direction to have someone other than the artist hang the work,” says Hildebrand. “We’re trying to make things interesting.”

Scott’s pieces represent work done during the past seven years, from figurative interpretations of her own life to rich and colourful abstracts.

Hildebrand says its difficult to go from figurative to abstract, and back again.

“That’s what makes her a great artist. She has the ability to move back and forth.”

At first glance, he notes the images are light and accessible.

“Then we are taken in through the looking glass where what you see is not necessarily what you get.”

The opening reception will include a talk by Scott at 7:30 p.m. and light refreshments will be available.

Parkside Art Gallery is located at 401 Cedar Ave.
