Elvis Presley was first and foremost a gospel singer.
He grew up in the Deep South where gospel music was heard in every church. It was the soul of the south and was the precursor to rock ‘n’ roll. Elvis won three Grammies and awards for his gospel songs, which were his true roots.
Steve Elliott, who is known for his Elvis Elite show, is bringing 'How Great Thou Art': the Sacred and Inspirational Songs of the King to the Martin Exeter Hall in 100 Mile House on Feb. 22, starting at 7:30 p.m.
“I love performing for the community and especially these songs," says Elliott. “People will be uplifted, inspired and hear the Gospel through song.”
It’s a different side of Elvis we’re bringing to 100 Mile right now, Elliott says, adding it’s the other side of Elvis.
His gospel songs have stories and bring back a lot of memories for people, Elliott notes.
“There was a lot of emotion in those songs for him. Elvis Presley loved gospel music and would sing far into the night at Graceland and he said his voice was a gift from God.”
Elliott will perform his solo show with backup tracks rather than other musicians.
"It’s all about the voice – no distractions or stage props. It’s just me up there sharing my passion through song."
