Concert series coming to the South Cariboo

Slapback Music Production bringing the blues to 100 Mile

Music-lovers are in for something new this season with a six-event blues concert series being produced by SlapBack Music Production of 108 Mile.

Gail and Peter Thorne operate the small home-based company, which has produced several local live concerts in the past, including Gary Fjellgaard, Tim Williams and Cara Luft.

They're really excited about their 2012 series, which opens with Barney Bentall on March 17. Bentall is one of Canada's prolific folk/roots singer/songwriters, with six studio albums under his belt.

Unique with this series is the choice of venues that includes the South Cariboo Theatre and the 108 Wheelhouse at 108 Resort Golf and Outdoor Adventures.

Bentall will play in the South Cariboo Theatre, which is undergoing upgrades to its sound system to support this and future concerts. Gail says the acoustics are good in the movie theatre and she's looking forward to trying it out.

Jacquie McKay, theatre co-owner, says stage lighting is also being installed.

Following Bentall, a new concert will be featured almost every month with April 26 in the Wheel Room booked with The Rakish Angles, a band from the Sunshine Coast that was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award in 2009 and a Western Canadian Music Award in 2010.

June 8 in the Wheel Room will feature Tim Williams, a 40-year veteran of the roots music scene with a New Orleans blues style.

On July 13, expect to see David Gogo who is known for his talent as a blues rock guitarist. He also plays in the Wheel Room.

August 15 in the Wheel Room is scheduled to feature Van Django, an acoustic string ensemble that is best known for its gypsy jazz style of music.

Moving on to Sept. 8 at the South Cariboo Theatre, check out the Jimmy D. Lane Band, with a unique southern blues style. Lane is an international blues/rock guitarist, performer and recording artist.

Tickets for the each of the concerts are already on sale and can be purchased in person at the South Cariboo Theatre box office each evening from 5 to 9 p.m. Tickets are also available online at www.slapback.ca, and the cost ranges between $35 and $40 at both outlets.

Tickets for all concerts can also be bought at the door for an additional $10.

Folks have an opportunity to receive a 50 per cent discount on each ticket in the series by purchasing a Lotus Club membership.

Memberships are $40 and only 50 will be sold. They can be purchased by contacting Gail at 250-791-5614 or by e-mail at slapback@shaw.ca. Members have up to two weeks prior to each concert to purchase their discount ticket.

Concert series performances at the South Cariboo Theatre will be licensed for liquor sales.
