Women’s Institute working hard on hall upgrades

North Green/Watch Lake news

The Watch Lake & District Women's Institute (WL&DWI) will be applying for grants for the Watch Lake Community Hall to address things like lighting and energy-efficient refrigeration.

Members are very pleased with how things are coming along in the hall and Lynda Krupp says she believes 2012 will put the crowning touches on all the work done by our amazing volunteers.

Helen Eagle will continue to be the “go-to” person to book the hall for any event. She knows the requirements for event permits, etc., and will gladly talk with anyone needing advice about this matter.

It should be known that no tables or chairs would be loaned or rented in the future for any event or business without express permission. Helen can be reached at 250-456-2413.

The WI&DWI continues to fund raise; however, the proceeds are down somewhat this summer from previous years.

The WI&DWI is a proud sponsor of the 4-H program both locally and provincially. It supports several hospitals, and this past year, they supported the Women's Program in 100 Mile House.

With only five active members, they have continued to support the many needs of the hall extension and upgrade and wish to continue this effort. The organization needs more members if it is to continue the work it does within the community, as well as outside of the community.

More members also mean more activities to enjoy. They look forward to actively seek more funding as grants become available.

Members will be once again be travelling to Washington State for a few days in November and taking in a few shopping trips. They hope to find sales galore for Christmas shopping and some of them will take in a little gambling.

If any readers would like more information about this annual trek to the United States, call Lynda at 250-456-7730 or Helen at 250-456-2413. These trips are really fun, and remember what happens in Washington stays in Washington.

Watch this column for exciting news as grant money becomes available.

Fire department

Watch Lake North Green Lake Volunteer Fire Department (WLNGLVFD) chief Guy Poliseno would like to remind everyone who uses a fireplace and/or wood stove for heating, to have his or her chimneys clean before the cold season approaches.

This will eliminate the build up of creosote in the lining of your chimney and reduce the risk of chimney fires.
