Who will be 2011 Citizen of the Year?

South Cariboo citizens were invited by the South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) to nominate people for Citizen of the Year

The nominations are in, but who will be the 2011 Citizen of the Year?

South Cariboo citizens were invited by the South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) to nominate people for Citizen of the Year. A requirement for nominees was their outstanding contributions of time and energy for the betterment of the South Cariboo community.

The nominated citizens include Sheila and Peter Hart, Darrell Blades, Tom Bachynski, Martin and Margaret Sarich, Graham Allison, Teresa Simpson,

Larry Rode, April Roberts, Jeanette McCrea, Lea Smirfitt and Eleanor Nicoll.

Anyone could place nominations, says SCCC manager Lisa Carr, but only members of the nomination committee can vote.

Donna Barnett is heading the committee again this year, Carr says, adding the committee is made up of past award winners.

“It’s very secretive. The winner will be announced at the awards banquet.”

The 18th Annual Academy Awards of Business evening will be held at the 100 Mile Community Hall on March 3, starting at 6 p.m.

The evening will have a silent auction and the dinner is catered by Firehouse Diner, Carr says, adding the chamber welcomes any silent auction donation items.

“It will be a western theme. People are welcome to come dressed in jeans if they like.”

The 2011 Citizen of the Year, the winners of the 12 business excellence categories and the People’s Choice winner (voted on that evening by a secret ballot) will be announced during the evening.

Ticket sales are going well, Carr says, adding seating is limited and she advises people to get their tickets early.

“We are doing something different this year; businesses are welcome to purchase a table for $100, which they can decorate to promote their business.”

She adds the table purchase includes two tickets.

The chamber will accept votes from people for the business excellence categories until Feb. 24.

Ballots are available online at www.southcariboochamber.org, or in today’s (Feb. 15) edition of the Free Press.
