What is food security?

On Jan. 17, Trish Chung and I will be presenting a workshop on food security in the Valley Room

By Diana Badke

Wouldn't it be nice if we never had to worry about having access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food to maintain a healthy and active life?

When I think of food I always think of Trish Chung. She is passionate about food and won the prestigious Minerva award for her contribution to Food Security in 2009.

On Jan. 17, Trish Chung and I will be presenting a workshop on food security in the Valley Room from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The workshop is open to anyone who would like to know more about how to cook nutritious, foods on a budget. Trish will demonstrate how to make a delicious soup using local foods and we will eat the soup for lunch.

I don't get to do anything quite that exciting, but I will make sure you understand the key words about food security and introduce you to many online resources where you can get more information about food security.

We will have many take home handouts, such as "what are the basic foods you should always have in your cupboard," and we also have several recipes to share with you.

Child-minding is provided through the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre's Community Kitchen program, but we will need to know how many children to expect, so please call 250-395-5155.

Service providers and community workers will have the opportunity to find ways to increase food security in our community.

This is just the first of many of the financial literacy workshops to be presented in the community in 2012.

On Feb. 17, a full-day workshop for service providers will take place.

It will cover budgeting and money management, home financing, financial planning, credit and debit, income tax, be a smart consumer, housing options, food security, and government supports for seniors.
