TNT holding fundraiser at the Iron Horse

They can just about see the finish line, as Nicki Dayman, her sister, Bobbi-Jo, and Kerri DuPont are on the last stretch for Rome.

The three women are members of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada's (LLSC) Team in Training (TNT) and have been raising funds to run in the Maratona di Roma in Rome on March 20.

To help raise funds, the Iron Horse Pub in Lone Butte is hosting a fundraiser on Feb. 26.

"We are having a charity night at the Iron Horse," Nicki says, adding there will be a silent auction, a 50/50 draw, basket raffles and the pub is having a burger-and-fries deal and are donating proceeds to the LLSC.

The pub will also have donation baskets out; all funds need to be raised before March 3. The trio is committed to going, knowing that if they don't raise the minimum requirement, they have to make up the difference from their own pockets.

Nicki and Bobbi-Jo's mother is currently battling Lymphocytic Leukemia and running the marathon is a way for her daughters to raise awareness and funds to battle this disease.

DuPont also has cancer in her family, but this was also a way for her to change some personal upheavals in her life.

"It's for a great cause and its easier to keep promises to other people than to just yourself."

All the women have been in training for months, and they are into the long distances now, DuPont says, alternating with cross training.

Bobbi-Jo, a sergeant with the First/Premier Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (1RCHA), decided quite a while ago to support Nicki and Kerri even if it was just meeting them at the end of the marathon route to hug and congratulate them.

"My military bosses here at 1RCHA have been beyond supportive for this. I have been gaining support and donations from the unit as well as the surrounding community."

Feeling very lucky to have been accepted by TNT with Kerri and Nicki, Bobbi-Jo is looking forward to raising awareness and funds for LLSC.

"If I can give the gift of hope and perseverance for those with a blood-borne cancer and offer funding for research and a step closer to the cure, that is what I would like to achieve from all of this adventure.

"With every step I take I would like it to be one step closer to the cure," says Bobbi-Jo.

"I hope that a marathon of 42.2 kilometres should get us closer or even all the way there."
