Visually impaired 100 Mile House resident Lori Fry needs some people to pilot her tandem bike, so she can get back into cycling.

Fry got the bike from the British Columbia Blind Sports and Recreation Association in Vancouver as a loan last month.

“They loaned it to me personally because I want to get back into cycling, as I gave up solo cycling three years ago because of my vision level.”

If everything works out, Fry says she may consider purchasing or fundraising for her own tandem bike – costs can run between $3,000 and $5,000.

Fry hopes to find sighted partners to serve as leads on the tandem bike to give her some practice.

She has had some calls responding to her posters, but she needs a pool of partners.

“Unfortunately, even though they’re interested doesn’t mean it will work out because the lead [rider] has to be a certain height – it’s a higher seat.”

Realizing people have busy lives, Fry says she needs a number of folks so there’s always someone who can go for a ride. Then there are no obligation issues for the lead riders if something comes up and they can go out, she adds.

“For me, it’s about being healthy and being active, but also helping the blind community by showing others what can be done by just doing it. It’s a dual purpose.”

Anyone interested in helping as a lead rider can reach Fry at 250-395-2452.
