Sustainability society launching winter film series

The South Cariboo Sustainability Society will be showing a series of films focusing on sustainability for the future

The South Cariboo Sustainability Society has a series of films lined up for showing throughout the winter and early spring, which society members would like to share with the general public.

They are films that will open up discussion about how the local community can make itself more sustainable for the future, and they will be shown monthly at the 100 Mile House Branch Library.

The first in the series is called Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil, and it runs on Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the 100 Mile House Branch Library meeting room. There is no admission cost.

The film takes a look at how the Cuban people transitioned from highly mechanized agriculture to using organic farming and urban gardens after an energy crisis that was sparked by the Soviet Union's collapse in 1990.

Society co-chair Patricia Spencer says she hopes it will encourage people to start growing more of their own food. "We can't depend on transporting our food thousand of miles. This film shows how the Cuban people worked together and it's inspiring."

The South Cariboo Sustainability Society, with more than 20 members, presented a fall film series, which drew a strong response from the public.
