Sustainability society elects board

Goals, activities outlined; more members encouraged

The South Cariboo Sustainability Society (SCSS) had a good turnout (25 people) when it held its recent annual general meeting and potluck dinner.

SCSS secretary Peter Jarvis says the presentation by Rod Hennecker on the Horse Lake Community Farm Co-operative was "really good," with plenty of discussion and questions and some interesting answers.

Plans for this year include holding workshops on gardening, permaculture and other popular topics, he adds.

Peter notes founding member Patricia Spencer stepped down as SCSS director, after more than six years on the board (several as its chair), as did director and Rebel Garden Zone project chair Nikki Chayka.

"There are just four of us now on the board. We are still looking for more; we are definitely in need of one or two people to join us.

"We meet [almost] every month on a Thursday. We don't run over the summer; we shut down for July, August and December."

Patricia says she is freeing up her time to work on other projects, but the topic of sustainability is "vital."

"Our society started as a result of the Cariboo-Chilcotin Beetle Action Committee ... it was disappointing when this funding ended because if we want to tackle sustainability, we all need to work together."

Continuing on the board are Hugh Thomas, chair; Barbara Jarvis, treasurer; and Shelley Tegart, director.

Peter says ongoing activities over the past year have seen the continuation of the professional film series offered to the community during the winter, the Rebel Garden Zone food security project in the summer, and assisting local environmental/sustainability projects as they arise.

This includes participating in the District of 100 Mile House's Miles Ahead project, and helping with the Community Place Garden downtown, he notes.

The group has limited funds available for a water-related sustainability project, so anyone with an idea for this can call him.

A lifetime membership is $10 for an individual and $15 for a family.
