Science Fair 2012 at 100 Mile House Elementary School gave students an opportunity to find the answers to their most mind-boggling questions and have fun in the process.

The annual fair, held Feb. 23 at the school, saw the gymnasium packed with science projects, including 32 that had been selected for judging and consideration for the upcoming School District 27 Science Fair.

The eight volunteer judges included 100 Mile House Mayor Mitch Campsall who was there for his fourth time.

"The kids are so inspiring. They come up with the greatest things. I don't think they've ever failed to surprise me."

After careful scrutiny by the judges, nine projects were chosen to move on to the District Fair.

In Grade 4 competition, Ryan Balbirnie placed first with his project, "Cool Candles," and he will advance to the district competition.

Second place went to Jordyn Karl with "Invisible Ink," and there was a third-place tie between Nigel Swann with "Making Paper," and Julia Mosher with "Puzzle Fun."

The Grade 5 division saw a joint project, "Mighty Magnets" by Pascal Glanz and Logan McFee, win first place and an invitation to District Fair. Joining them will be the second-place winning duo of Mina Geertz and Caitlyn McLean, with "Hey! Who turned out the Lights?" Third place went to Ethan Fitzpatrick with "Can Soil Clean Dirty Water?"

Anya Levermann's project, "Marbles of Fury," was the first-place winner in the Grade 6 division and it has qualified for districts.

In second place, Ryen Oldegbers also advances with "Oil Spill Cleanup." Courtney Cave tied with him for second with "Natural Filters," but she does not advance.
